Species360 science team – transforming data into conservation action
Meet the experts on the Species360 science team who are leveraging the power of ZIMS data for conservation science and research. Our goal since day one is to develop strategic research that explores and demonstrates the value of our member’s data.
Dr. Johanna StärkPostDoc Researcher Species360
Dr. Johanna Stärk is a PostDoc Researcher and part of the Species360 Science team working at the Max-Planck Odense Center on the Biodemography of Aging and the Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). She has a Master in Neurobiology and Behavior, where she studied the social networks of captive gorilla populations and became interested in zoo conservation biology. Her current research focuses on methods to leverage sparse demographic data to guide more effective conservation decisions. Specifically she is excited about these questions:
- How much demographic knowledge is available for the world’s tetrapods?
- How can ZIMS data fill demographic knowledge gaps?
- How can we use demographic knowledge from captive and wild populations to improve IUCN extinction risk assessments?
- How can we use limited available data to make better conservation decisions to prioritize actions for in-situ and ex-situ management?
